Dr. Yoojin Muhn - Music Director
Dr. Yoojin Muhn accepted the position of Music Director for the San Antonio Mastersingers in the 2022-2023 season. She currently serves as the Director of Choral Activities at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she oversees a comprehensive choral program, conducts the UTSA Chamber Singers, and teaches undergraduate and graduate choral conducting.
Dr. Muhn is highly in demand as a clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator. Recently, she was invited to conduct Mozart’s Requiem with the New York City Chamber Orchestra as part of Manhattan Concert Productions (MCP)’s Masterwork Series at Carnegie Hall in June 2023. Prior to her appointment at UTSA, she served as the Artistic Director of the Tucson Masterworks Chorale in Tucson, Arizona, co-directed the Oriana Women’s Chorus, and assisted in leading the Concert Choir at the University of Southern California. Furthermore, she was selected as a conducting fellow at both Oregon Bach Festival and the Yale Summer School of Music-Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.
As a conductor and ensemble musician, Dr. Muhn has had an extensive performing career in various venues across the globe, including South Korea, China, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. Some of the highlights of her performances include works with Pierre Boulez, Simon Carrington, Grant Gershon, Matthew Halls, Neeme Järvi, and Helmuth Rilling, and performed at many prestigious concert venues and halls, such as Carnegie Hall, Kimmel Center, Lincoln Center, and Walt Disney Concert Hall.
She received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Music with honors from the University of Southern California, a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Music degree in Sacred Music from Westminster Choir College (where she graduated with distinction), and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Composition from SookMyung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea.
Dr. N. Seth Nelson - Organist/Collaborative Pianist
Seth Nelson is the Collaborative Pianist and Organist for the San Antonio Mastersingers. He also maintains an active schedule of collaborating with singers and instrumentalists in the central Texas region.
A passionate church musician, Seth is also Organist at the First Baptist Church of San Antonio, where he has served since September 2009. Previously, he was Organist at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas and Shephard of the Lakes Lutheran Church in Brighton, Michigan.
Dr. Nelson, an Associate with the American Guild of Organists maintains and active concert schedule and has performed in France, Poland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and the United States.
He has earned a DMA and MM in organ performance at The University of Michigan, under the tutelage of Dr. Marilyn Mason. While there, he was also the first to earn the Certificate in Musicology, writing a thesis on the pipe organ controversy of the Puritans in New England. He earned a BM from the University of Texas at San Antonio as a pupil of Dr. Bess Hieronymus.
Seth makes his home in San Antonio with his wife Becky who also sings with the Mastersingers.
Isaac Chavez - Chorus Manager
Our Chorus Manager, Isaac Chavez, is a 19 year veteran of the San Antonio Mastersingers. He has held various leadership positions within the chorus including board chair, section leader, tour manager, programming director, and helped transition the chorus into the digital and social media age. Isaac studied music education and theater performance at Tarleton State University.
Isaac serves as the liaison between the chorus and the Music Director, coordinates chorus communication, fields questions about auditions, and provides administrative and production support. Duties include scheduling and overseeing the audition process, managing the chorus CRM, oversight of the leave of absence and attendance policies and other chorus documentation.
Outside of his work with the San Antonio Mastersingers, Isaac is an instructional designer at USAA where he writes curriculum and builds web based trainings for employees. He also serves as a national officer for the Sigma Chi International Fraternity.
